Why most Hartford County properties need a wall somewhere

Hartford County terrain is rolling. Most properties in Avon, Simsbury, Canton and New Hartford have at least one significant grade change between the house and the property line. West Hartford and Farmington are flatter but still have plenty of properties where a wall makes the backyard functional. Either way, there’s a good chance there’s a wall in your future.

What we build

Our specialty. Connecticut fieldstone boulder walls, hand-set with the equipment to do it right. The visual you can’t fake: walls that look like they grew out of the ground, with stones arranged so each one supports the next, mortared from behind where you can’t see it.
Boulder walls work in almost every backyard style. They feel natural and rustic but they can also be formal when set in straight lines with consistent stone sizing. Most of the boulder walls we build in West Hartford, Avon and Simsbury are between three and six feet tall. We’ve built taller, but anything over four feet typically requires engineering and may require permits.
We source local Connecticut fieldstone whenever possible, from quarries within an hour of our shop. The stone is irregular by nature. Every wall we build is unique because every stone is different.

The simplest water feature we offer and one of the most charming. A single large boulder, drilled vertically through the center, with water bubbling up through the top and running down the sides. Sits flat in a gravel bed with an underground reservoir. Looks like something a glacier left there.

Bubbling boulders are perfect for tight spaces, entryways, garden corners and front yards. They’re also the most affordable water feature to install and the easiest to maintain. We use Connecticut fieldstone whenever possible, sourced from local quarries. Each boulder is unique, which means yours will be too.

For more contemporary architecture or for engineered walls where uniformity matters, we install segmental block systems from Techo-Bloc, Belgard, Unilock and Cambridge. These are precast concrete units engineered specifically for retaining wall installation, with interlocking pin systems, integrated drainage channels, and consistent block geometry that allows tall, geometric wall designs.

Segmental walls are typically faster to install than boulder walls and slightly less expensive on a square-foot basis. They work especially well when the wall is large or when the design calls for clean horizontal lines and uniform color.

For the tallest walls and the largest jobs, we sometimes build poured-concrete walls with a natural stone veneer face. This gives the structural strength of engineered concrete with the appearance of natural stone work. We use this approach when grade changes are dramatic enough that a freestanding boulder wall wouldn’t be structurally appropriate.

Instead of one tall wall, several shorter walls stacked back from each other create terraced gardens, multi-level patios, and dramatic landscape progressions. We’ve built tiered systems with three and four levels on steep Avon and Simsbury properties, turning what was unusable hillside into the most distinctive feature on the property.

  • $18,000 to $32,000: Medium boulder or block wall, 3-5 feet tall, 30-60 linear feet, with proper drainage and base preparation
  • $32,000 to $55,000: Larger structural retaining wall, 4-6 feet tall, 50-100 linear feet, with geogrid reinforcement and engineering

Common Questions
About Walls

Properly built, no. A wall built with the correct base, drainage, and reinforcement should perform for fifty years or longer. The walls that fail are the ones where someone skipped the drainage or the base preparation. We build them right the first time so they don’t need replacement.

Most Connecticut municipalities require permits for any retaining wall over four feet tall. Walls under four feet typically don’t require a permit but may require engineering documentation depending on the soil conditions and surcharge load. We handle permit applications when they apply.

Aesthetic preference is usually the deciding factor. Boulder walls feel natural, rustic and substantial. Block walls feel cleaner, more contemporary, more uniform. Both perform equally well structurally when built correctly. Boulder walls cost a bit more because of the labor involved in placing each stone.

A short decorative wall takes 4-7 days. A medium retaining wall with drainage takes 2-3 weeks. A larger structural wall with geogrid takes 3-5 weeks. Multi-tier systems and complex projects can run 5-8 weeks.

Yes, with care. We don’t cut significant tree roots, which sometimes means routing the wall around the root zone or building a tree well into the wall design. We evaluate this during the property walk.
