Why most Hartford County properties need a wall somewhere
If your lot has any meaningful grade change, a wall is the difference between a backyard you can use and a backyard you mow around. We’ve seen properties where the homeowner had written off half their land because of a slope, only to install a retaining wall and effectively double their usable space.
Hartford County terrain is rolling. Most properties in Avon, Simsbury, Canton and New Hartford have at least one significant grade change between the house and the property line. West Hartford and Farmington are flatter but still have plenty of properties where a wall makes the backyard functional. Either way, there’s a good chance there’s a wall in your future.
The right wall does more than just hold back dirt. It creates flat usable space where there wasn’t any. It frames a patio or seating area. It supports a planting bed at viewing height. It anchors a water feature. It can be the single most transformative element in a backyard project.
What we build
Natural boulder wall
Our specialty. Connecticut fieldstone boulder walls, hand-set with the equipment to do it right. The visual you can’t fake: walls that look like they grew out of the ground, with stones arranged so each one supports the next, mortared from behind where you can’t see it.
Boulder walls work in almost every backyard style. They feel natural and rustic but they can also be formal when set in straight lines with consistent stone sizing. Most of the boulder walls we build in West Hartford, Avon and Simsbury are between three and six feet tall. We’ve built taller, but anything over four feet typically requires engineering and may require permits.
We source local Connecticut fieldstone whenever possible, from quarries within an hour of our shop. The stone is irregular by nature. Every wall we build is unique because every stone is different.
Bubbling boulders
The simplest water feature we offer and one of the most charming. A single large boulder, drilled vertically through the center, with water bubbling up through the top and running down the sides. Sits flat in a gravel bed with an underground reservoir. Looks like something a glacier left there.
Bubbling boulders are perfect for tight spaces, entryways, garden corners and front yards. They’re also the most affordable water feature to install and the easiest to maintain. We use Connecticut fieldstone whenever possible, sourced from local quarries. Each boulder is unique, which means yours will be too.
Segmental block retaining walls
For more contemporary architecture or for engineered walls where uniformity matters, we install segmental block systems from Techo-Bloc, Belgard, Unilock and Cambridge. These are precast concrete units engineered specifically for retaining wall installation, with interlocking pin systems, integrated drainage channels, and consistent block geometry that allows tall, geometric wall designs.
Segmental walls are typically faster to install than boulder walls and slightly less expensive on a square-foot basis. They work especially well when the wall is large or when the design calls for clean horizontal lines and uniform color.
Stone-faced concrete walls
For the tallest walls and the largest jobs, we sometimes build poured-concrete walls with a natural stone veneer face. This gives the structural strength of engineered concrete with the appearance of natural stone work. We use this approach when grade changes are dramatic enough that a freestanding boulder wall wouldn’t be structurally appropriate.
Tiered wall systems
Instead of one tall wall, several shorter walls stacked back from each other create terraced gardens, multi-level patios, and dramatic landscape progressions. We’ve built tiered systems with three and four levels on steep Avon and Simsbury properties, turning what was unusable hillside into the most distinctive feature on the property.
How we build walls that last decades
Wall failure is one of the most expensive landscape problems a homeowner can face. A wall that fails has to be completely removed and rebuilt, which usually means tearing out everything around it too. So we build walls assuming they need to last fifty years.
Excavation and footing
Every wall starts with excavation to undisturbed soil. We dig a footing trench at least twelve inches deeper than the bottom of the wall and at least eighteen inches wider, then compact a layer of three-quarter inch crushed stone for the structural foundation. The footing is wider than the wall it supports.
Drainage behind the wall
This is the part most landscape contractors skip. Behind every retaining wall we install a perforated drain line at the base, set in a stone-filled channel, with a clean-out access at one end. Water that would otherwise build up behind the wall and push it forward gets channeled away to daylight or to a dry well.
Without proper drainage behind a wall, water pressure in winter freezes and expands and pushes the wall outward. This is why so many walls built without drainage start to lean within five or ten years. The walls we build have engineered drainage built in from day one.
Geogrid reinforcement
For walls over three feet tall, we install woven geogrid reinforcement at intervals up the wall. Geogrid is a strong synthetic mesh that extends back into the soil behind the wall, creating a reinforced soil mass that resists the lateral pressure trying to push the wall over. This is engineering-grade construction that most residential walls don’t include.
Boulder placement
For boulder walls specifically, the placement of each stone matters. We set boulders so each one bridges the joint below it, like masonry coursing. The visible faces are oriented to show the most attractive surfaces. Stones interlock both vertically and horizontally so the wall acts as a unit, not a stack.
What it costs
- $10,000 to $18,000: Short decorative wall, 2-3 feet tall, 20-40 linear feet, integrated into a planting bed
- $18,000 to $32,000: Medium boulder or block wall, 3-5 feet tall, 30-60 linear feet, with proper drainage and base preparation
- $32,000 to $55,000: Larger structural retaining wall, 4-6 feet tall, 50-100 linear feet, with geogrid reinforcement and engineering
- $55,000 to $80,000+: Multi-tier systems or very large walls, often part of a complete property transformation
Pricing varies significantly with stone type, height, length, drainage complexity, and site access. Boulder walls cost more per square foot than block walls because of the labor involved in handling and placing each stone individually.
